The Forgotten Four Hundred

The following table lists 400 papers that were cited by J. Lederberg in the papers he authored or co-authored during the years 1946-1952 (an artificial criterion used in the NLM website). It is assumed J. Lederberg thought the papers were significant, else why did he cite them in his papers? The statement found in his web site, that he reshaped the field "single-handedly", implies that the research in these papers did not "reshape the field." It should be borne in mind that in addition to the 400 papers listed, there were other important relevant research papers not cited by J. Lederberg during these years.

The list of researchers includes:

  1. A number of Nobel Laureates in the area of genetics, including the two who shared J. Lederberg's own Nobel prize
  2. Almost all of the very influential Cold Spring Harbor researchers (whose names are underlined in the following table)
  3. Researchers from institutes such as the Institut Pasteur, Max Planck Institute, etc.
  4. J. Lederberg's mentors and teachers, such as F. Ryan, G. W. Beadle, Ed. Tatum, etc.
  5. J. Lederberg's wife, the highly respected researcher Esther M. Zimmer Lederberg
